FAQs
-
What legal services are available to me?WE CAN offers free 30-minute one-on-one consultations for any person who needs help in various areas of law. WE CAN also offers legal workshops on a variety of topics and all workshops are facilitated by experienced attorneys with expertise in the subject matter. All legal consultations are by appointment so please call our office to schedule.
-
How do I know if I qualify for legal services?WE CAN offers legal services for any person with a low to moderate income who lives in Barnstable County and is not currently represented by an attorney. WE CAN offers appointments on a first come, first serve basis.
-
Will the attorney represent me in court?WE CAN attorneys are all volunteers and unfortunately, they are not able to represent you in court or research the specifics of your case. They can provide targeted information and guidance about your legal situation based on the information you provided at the time of your scheduled appointment. The attorney can help you think about legal options and what possible next steps to take.
-
What happens if I need to hire an attorney after my appointment? There are times when you may want to hire an attorney after having your WE CAN appointment. WE CAN staff can provide you with a list of attorneys in the area. WE CAN does not refer to specific attorneys and unfortunately can’t advise you on the costs associated with hiring an attorney.
-
Who will know that I signed up for legal services?WE CAN takes your privacy very seriously. All of WE CAN’s services are confidential. All staff and volunteers understand the importance of keeping all information shared with them confidential. No one will know that you signed up for a legal consultation. All participants in a legal workshop (which is held in a group or classroom format) sign an agreement to keep all information discussed confidential and private. If you have a concern about your confidentiality, please ask to speak with a manager.
-
Why do you need the name of my spouse, landlord, employer, etc.?A volunteer or staff member will ask you for the name of your “opposing party” when signing you up for a consultation. The “opposing party” is the other person involved in your legal situation. No one associated with WE CAN will contact that person at any point. WE CAN shares that information with the volunteer attorney so that we can ensure the attorney you are meeting with has not represented, or had interactions, with the opposing party.
-
Can you help me to fill out paperwork for court?WE CAN volunteers are able to help individuals complete some legal forms. Please call the office to talk with a WE CAN staff person more about this service.
-
Do you offer remote legal services?WE CAN’s volunteer attorneys offer consultations by phone, on Zoom or in person in the Harwich Port or Hyannis locations. Legal workshops are typically in person but please see the schedule for more information.
-
